English

Our vibrant, forward-thinking English department provides students with an exciting curriculum that engages them with a wide range of language and literature texts, from Chaucer and Shakespeare to the study of media and modern, cutting-edge fiction.

Our students communicate effectively not only in writing but orally, taking part in discussion, debates and delivering presentations.

We believe that when students are fully engaged, they thrive, so it is a joy to see the enthusiasm with which they approach our popular annual Poetry Slam, curriculum enrichment days, theatre trips, public speaking competitions, Book Group and highly competitive inter-house Reading Challenge. We have strong links with Bristol University, who deliver bespoke extension classes that take students on a journey from Arthurian literature to Keats and Browning.

Modern Foreign Languages

At Collegiate, our vision is for all language learners to develop the skills and confidence to become ‘World Citizens’, belonging to a multicultural and mutually respectful world. We aim to support students to understand other countries and cultures so that they can be more open and adaptable to new experiences.

Throughout Key Stage 3 (Year 7 to 9), everyone studies French and Spanish. Languages are optional in KS4. In KS5 we offer to follow the full A-Level course or the AS course over two years as a 4th A-Level option choice. Both our GCSE and A-Level examinations are from AQA exam board.

We enhance our work in the classroom with regular trips to expose students to cultural diversity and give them the chance to use the language in real-life situations.

Students can also become Language Ambassadors to represent a language and/or a culture they are passionate about. At Collegiate, we proudly celebrate European Language Week, Culture Day, International Mother Tongue Day, Chinese New Year and many other events.
